Natural Fertilizers from Fertrell

Organic 5 Step Lawn Care Program

Earth In Hand is proud to offer its customers an all-natural alternative for lawn care. Our Organic 5 Step program uses Fertrell brand products to give you a healthy, full lawn without the weeds.

Step 1: March/Apri Lawn Carel-

Apply Weedban pre-emergent herbicide at 20lbs./1000 sq.ft. This also adds 3% residual nitrogen. High calcium pelletized lime can also be added at this time.

Step 2 - April/May Lawn Care-

Fertilize with Fertrell brand Nitrell 5-3-4* at 10 lbs./ 1000 sq. ft.

Step 3- June Lawn Care-

Apply kelp meal at 3-5 lbs/1000 sq. ft. Milky spore can also be applied now for grub control to prevent Japanese beetle investation if necessary.

Step 4- September/October Lawn Care-

Use a high calcium pelletized lime to keep ph in the 6-6.5 range. Apply 25-50 lbs./1000 sq. ft. The more weeds present in the lawn, the higher the application.

Step 5- October/November Lawn Care-

Apply a balanced fertilizer, Fertrell Nitrell 5-3-4* at 10-15 lbs./1000 sq. ft.

* Substitutions based on soil test results: Turfmaster 8-1-8, Fertrell Lawn 9-1-4, Super N 4-2-4

Tips to keep your lawn healthy and natural

  • Use blended grass seed when seeding your lawn. Tall fescue blends are tough and attractive while being drought and disease resistant.

  • Never mow your lawn below a 3” height. Don’t rake or collect grass clippings. Allow grass clippings to return to the lawn and become an added source of nitrogen.

  • Don’t aerate or thatch mechanically. Instead, use humates (decaying organic matter) which will help break down thatch and aerate lawns naturally.

  • Use Burn Out weed control to get rid of perennial weeds.

  • Add compost to establish and maintain your lawns. Healthy soil is composed of 5% organic matter.

The difference between chemicals and organic

Chemical fertilizers are made from chemically processed or refined materials. They
encourage plants to suck nutrients out of the soil, leaving it infertile. Many contain harsh
substances like sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, which can leach into groundwater and pollute the environment.

Organic fertilizers are made from natural materials. Unlike chemical products, they encourage the soil’s growth of micro-organisms, which break down old plant material and convert nutrients into food. Over time, your soil becomes healthier and more fertile. Your plants grow hardy and robust, year after year.
