Grub control- Why Control Grubs?
Grub control is essential because grubs will destroy your lawn. They go after thick lawns that provide a moist environment, so a green, thick, lush lawn that has lots of grass and few weeds, and which is left untreated for grubs, is a prime candidate for grub infestation.
Also, grubs are larvae which grow into Japanese beetles(not beatles). This years Japanese beetles lay eggs which turn into grubs and the grubs after a long winter will become Japanese beetles. So taking care of the grubs will also reduce your Japanese beetle problems.
Another problem which may occur from having grubs is that often times, you will get skunks that love to eat grubs. So not only do you have a dead lawn, but you will have some unwelcomed smelly visitors.
Grub control can occur at numerous times during the beetle/grub life cycle, but it should be done every year. If you are using our organic 5 step lawn care program, we suggest using Milky spore in June.
Another non-chemical method of treating your lawn for grubs, which has been gaining popularity, is the use of Nematodes. Nematodes are living organisms which attack the grubs from the inside. Just like chemical treatments, Nematodes can be purchased from garden centers and applied using the manufacturers directions for maximum results.
Lastly, humates (decaying organic matter) should be used, which will help break down thatch and aerate lawns naturally. If humates are not going to be used, then lawns should be periodically thatched and plugged to aerate and aide in grub control.
